All-State Percussion Audition

Postby jcraig on Mon Oct 05, 2009 6:33 pm

I haven't had a percussion audition for all-state for several years, I have a couple of questions:

In the audition, does the student draw a scale card for mallets like the other winds?
Is the required timpani tuning pitch (not for etude) given or does the student play their own pitch pipe?
Are timpani provided for the audition?

Thanks,
Jamie

I know I'm a new teacher but, I wasn't in high school all that long ago, my wife plays percussion, and I see that nobody has given a reply yet. So...

1. Yes you draw a card for the scales just like the winds, you also get to choose a scale to play.
2. The student gives their own pitch. They can use the pitch pipe or if for some reason they do not have a pitch pipe they can probably use the mallet instrument to find a pitch.
3. Yes you have to bring your own timpani, unless you contact the host school and try to arrange to use their equipment.

I hope this was helpful!

Jamie-
I got a packet about All-State auditions from Harlan yesterday and had a lot of information. Keep an eye out... I think it is near the bottom of one of the pages :)
